Final Project Description
My project represents the struggles
of being an African American in the United States and the pressures that come
with it. It depicts an African American woman. She is down on her knees while
being chained up by her wrist. The hand that is holding the chain is white
because it represents capitalism. Our nation was built on capital at the
expense of slaves and people in the working class. The colors black and white were
chosen because everything is always reduced to black or white; there is hardly
ever an in-between. The words written on her body represent the labels that are
put on black people by the government and society. These labels take away parts
of a person; they are expected to fit into these labels and never do anything
different. As African Americans, we must remember that we are people, too, and we
deserve the same opportunities as white America.
The subprime is represented by the
large hand behind the woman. There is a hole in the woman’s back, and there is
money falling out of it. This hand is draining her, and she already has lost
parts of herself. She is becoming a shell that contributes back to capitalism.
We are expected to give our life to earning money when we never see a
substantial portion of it. All of this is happening behind her back to show
that we know that things are being taken from us, but it is our choice to break
free of the system and turn around.
Hopefully, my drawing will make
people realize that they are contributing to a broken system. This system was
built against anyone who was not white and born with money. It is also
important that we help the people in our communities since we are often left
out. It is up to the individual to get what they deserve instead of helping
people that were never on their side.
