Dana and The Subprime

Caulia Washington Ms. Harris 1 May 2023 ENGL 2017-64187 Dana and The Subprime             In the book, “Kindred” by Octavia Butler and the show based off the book, the main character, Dana, is able to time travel to the past. She learns that she is sent back to help her ancestors survive. The book depicts the subprime by demonstrating the exploitation of enslaved black people and the continuing systematic racism in the United States. The show based on the book implies that being able to travel through time is a generational gift brought onto the women in Dana’s family after they’ve turned twenty-six. Dana and the women before her are unwilling contributors to their ancestors. The mystery on how they are able to time travel contributes to the black gothic through Dana’s experience of trauma and oppression on the plantation.             Butler wanted readers to ...

Dark is Evil

Makayla Malveaux  Professor Harris  English 2017  30th April 2023  Dark is Evil  This class is based on the idea of black gothic. So you might ask, what is black gothic? Well, black Gothic is basically your atoning for the dead or the living. I would like to stem the idea of why black characters are portrayed as evil, which roots in colorism. As you may know, many characters that are portrayed as bad tend to have a darker skin tint. Most will even include very stereotypical features that are placed upon black people. I would like to highlight this stigma placed upon black people and where this idea originated from. There are many networks that showcase these stigmas against black people, but I would like to build my argument based on the Disney channel. Unfortunately, Disney is known for many racist remarks and discrimination. They use these biased images that is characterized by black people form the past history of southern states. Now the bias image tha...

Repairing through repayment- Mixtape

Isyss Paige Professor Harris 1 May 2023 ENGL 2017   Repairing through repayment. My interpretation of this theme is during the effort of anyone (anyone as in African Americans) trying to get a reparation, there is a clear pattern of emotions: frustration, exhaustion, & passion. And in this case, I believe frustration is what drives motivation. Any attempt to act or get repayment, there is motivation. 1.       “When will We be Paid” The Staples Singers When will we be paid for the work we’ve done? When will we be paid for the work we’ve done?” This song is repetitive, but it talks about the work African Americans have done, just like in “Coates”. She gets frustrated because black people have done so much but hasn’t got repaid yet. 2.       “Dedication” Nipsey Hussle ft. Kendrick Lamar “How long should I stay dedicated? /How long ’til opportunity meets preparation? /I need some real nigga reparations.” ...

Racism, discrimination, afro pessimism, and racial profiling is ongoing effect in America. When I think of racial profiling, I instantly think about our classroom theme, The Black Gothic. Black men today are look down upon by the white law enforcement because the color their skin. We live in a world where black men are rarely judge by the content of character, but for simply been a black man. African American mothers are afraid for their son to leave the house because the high rate of police killing. White law enforcement are the ones who are mostly responsible for doing the killing. Anime- Visual

Amine Emma Sullivan  Anime is a genre of animated shows that are produced in Japan. The shows are usually an animated adaptation of a Japanese comic book called a manga. It has become very popular worldwide over the last few decades. As anime spread outside of Japan, the racist depictions of darker characters began to be noticed and called out. It is well known that colorism runs rampant in many Asian countries- years of European colonization mean the beauty standard looks as close to them as possible: small lips, a pale complexion, a small nose, and delicate stature. This is reflected in the media they produce. Villains are often made to have features that they have deemed unattractive, like dark skin and big noses (a common problem in American media). Even though they are associated with America, Japan had menstrual shows along with many of the same stereotypes about black people. This can easily be seen through the many racist depictions in their shows. Though there are differen...
